I recently discovered this Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution in Washington Square in Philadelphia ; many  soldiers who died during the American Revolutionary War are buried in mass graves in Washington Square itself. On this Memorial Day, let us remember and thank these brave men and all of the men and women who have died in military service to the United States of America.

P.S. Notice the exfoliating bark on the trunks of the two mature London plane trees flanking the Memorial. The London planetree is often planted in cities because it is resistant to air pollution ; one theory is that the regular peeling of the bark allows it to shed pollutants.
