Auricula theatres have been a spring tradition in England since the 1800's; they consist of a wooden showcase on which are displayed auricula primroses (hybrids of Primula auricula and Primula hirsuta) that have been carefully raised all winter to bloom in the spring. I chanced upon a lovely garden blog from the Winterbourne Garden in England showing how they built their auricula theatre. The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) in the Bronx has its own theater (as we spell it in the United States); it was designed in 2007 by The Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury, a celebrated garden designer, garden historian, and horticulturist. See photo of the NYBG theater below, currently on display in the Nancy Bryan Luce Herb Garden. #NYBG #primula
